If you receive mail that isn't addressed to you, here's what you should do:
Do not open it. Opening someone else's mail is illegal.
Return it to the mail carrier. The easiest and most straightforward method is to simply give the mail back to your mail carrier/postal worker when they come by. Let them know it was delivered to the wrong address.
Put it back in the mailbox. You can write "Not at this address" or "Wrong Address" on the envelope and place it back in your mailbox with the flag up. The mail carrier will pick it up and hopefully redirect it to the correct recipient.
Drop it off at a post office. If you prefer, you can take the misdelivered mail to your local post office and hand it over to a clerk.
Contact the sender. If you recognize the sender, and know how to contact them (email, phone), you could reach out to let them know their mail was misdelivered. However, this is not required or always practical.
Avoid discarding the mail. Even if you believe the recipient has moved away or the mail is old, throwing it away could potentially be seen as interfering with the mail. It's always best to return it to the postal service.
Report Persistent Errors. If you repeatedly receive mail that isn't yours, consider contacting the United States Postal Service (USPS) to report the problem. There may be an issue with the mail carrier's route or the way your address is registered.
